macgraw Spring/Summer 2012

We need to talk about how perfect the eponymous Australian label 'macgraw' - brainchild of Beth and Tess Macgraw. More specifically, we need to talk about the Spring/Summer collection. I'm loving everything about this one: the lines, textures, and the colour scheme are all fit to make my mouth water. I am just obsessed with how wearable this collection is as a whole, and how these items could be taken from weekday to weekend with minimal effort. What do you think? xo, CK

Denim on Denim

I've always been a bit hesitant to rock the double denim look. I've seen (and loved!) it splashed all over the pages of fashion magazines and e-boutiques like Revolve Clothing but I've also long suspected that double denim only looks chic on teeny tiny models with toothpick thighs. Today I caved and decided to try it by throwing on my Sass chambray shirt (AKA: My new obsession as evidenced by the fact that I can't stop thinking of new ways to wear it!) with my Lee Supatube skinny jeans and my Tony Bianco nude platforms.

I've read that there are two key elements to working the denim-on-denim look. The first is to make sure that you don't go matchy-matchy: Pick two different denim washes. The looks that I've been most fond of have always featured a lighter wash on top and a darker wash on the bottom. The second rule is to keep accessories simple; double denim is enough of a statement without overburdening your outfit with rings, necklaces, and outrageous statement-making shoes. If you're looking to add colour to your outfit, do so with a simple necklace or bag.

To accessorize I slipped on my favourite vintage rings and the spike necklace that I recently bought from ASOS, along with my Portmans handbag.

I'm now thinking of all sorts of denim combinations, and I'd love to pair a chambray shirt with jeans and a beautiful red handbag - like, say, the one currently on my eBay watch list - or with beautifully frayed One Teaspoon shorts, an outrageously large tote and leather sandals for an effortless, beachy look.

So I have to ask: What's your opinion on the denim suit? And if you're a fan, how would you accessorize one?

Errand Day

Today it seemed like I had a never-ending list of things to do - enroll in classes, return library books, do laundry, finish up another piece for Purple Sneakers, et cetera, et cetera, ad infinitum. I don't even remember the last time I was so content to sit at home on a Thursday night burning a sweet-scented candle, eating and watching Gossip Girl. (Case in point: A single sitting I went from 9 episodes behind to two episodes behind.) Usually at this time on a Thursday I'm dolled up and hounding the bar staff at Press Club to make me a little fruit salad from the delicious collection of fresh fruit intended for cocktails.

Seeing as I was run off of my feet today, I figured I could at least be run off of my feet in style:

I woke up this morning and decided I wanted to wear my favourite skirt (from Forever New). While the crocheted lace detailing of the skirt is beautiful, it can sometimes mean that this skirt looks too dressy for everyday wear. To dress it down - and make it more "errand day" appropriate - I teamed it with my new boyfriend style denim shirt from Sass (bought on sale through the very lovely girls at Birdsnest, a site that I can't recommend enough!) and orange suede flats from Target, before accessorizing with my favourite handbag and layered chain necklace (both from Portmans).

As a side note, the Q&A I did with Australian artist Caitlin Park is now live and can be found on the Purple Sneakers website. I'm going to leave you with my playlist for today

What's In My Makeup Bag

I've never been one of those girls who likes to carry huge handbags for a number of reasons. The first is that I hate how easy it is to lose your things in a big bag. Items that should be close at hand - a wallet, hand sanitizer, your mobile phone - get lost among a barrage of things that you don't really need to be carrying around on a day-to-day. (One of my friends recently went through her bag looking for pawpaw ointment and found a scientific calculator and a stuffed teddy in her bag; she studies visual arts and has no children that I know of.)

The second reason is that I don't like the shoulder pain that comes from a small bag with a shoulder strap, let alone a hefting tote filled with items superfluous to my daily life. For that reason, I made the conscious decision to streamline everything I carry.

As someone with a little bit of a beauty addiction, it can sometimes be hard to limit the things you carry with you. I've often been sorely tempted to throw my bottle of Fix+ in my bag (just in case I get cakey during the day!) or a pair of false lashes. Instead, I've limited myself to 9 key items that I know will come in handy, instead of merely taking up space and causing annoyance.

b collection by bloom Quick Fix Kit Concealer Palette in Fair - Medium

b collection by bloom is a diffusion line by one of my favourite Australian cosmetic lines, sold exclusively in Target stores. This palette of concealers is small and efficient, with a green concealer (perfect for those like me who experience redness around their nose and the corners of their mouth), a yellow concealer (which, when mixed with one of the three skin coloured concealers, is perfect for hiding any darkness under the eyes) and a highlighter that creates a beautiful, candle-lit glow that's simultaneously shimmery and subtle. The quality of the product is amazing if you're not shy of a creamy concealer, and the product is high coverage but blends.

Garnier Skin Naturals Caffeine Eye Roll-On

Two years ago I was living with my best friend L and noticed that she had it in her makeup bag. I didn't pay it much mind again until a few weeks ago, when I started becoming paranoid about dark shadows under my eyes in photographs. At that point I went out and purchased this product and, for now, it is my primary weapon in the war against dark circles. I apply this after my foundation and blend with a Gorgeous Cosmetics 016 brush or my Body Shop foundation brush during application of my makeup at home, and then re-apply as needed, blending using my fingers.

Lacura Beauty Concealer Pen in Transparent

I bought this concealer pen on a whim while shopping in Aldi with my mum two years ago. I was intrigued because it seemed to mimic the YSL Touche Eclat highlighter pens that I'd been reading about for years in fashion and beauty columns. After trying it once, I become an avid fan (and if the YSL pen is anything like this, I'll be trying it by the end of the year!) and now buy in bulk whenever the pens are in store. It conceals blemishes like no other product I've ever tried, blends naturally without any extra effort on my part, and adds dimension to the face when applied on the cheekbones, underneath and above the brows (which, double whammy, makes messy brows look perfectly plucked within seconds) and in the Cupid's bow.

I was always a fan of a matte face but this summer I've been all about the dewy complexion. I'm using this Stila liquid luminizer until I can get my hot little hands on Benefit's High Beam but so far I've been impressed with how well it complements my [fake] tan.

I won't even talk about the fact that I carry a travel-sized bottle of Cedel Extra Firm hairspray with me, purely because it's not the best product on the market. It does, however, smell like dance recitals and can make your hair look delightfully shiny under certain lighting.

I am a stickler for scents and wear the same ones over and over again. In summer it's Verbena by L'Occitane during the day and Japanese Cherry Blossom by The Body Shop at night. Unfortunately, I'm often running from day time activities to night without making a pit stop by my vanity and, rather than tote a bottle of perfume around - following a disaster last year that involved a brand new bottle of Verbena, my favourite handbag and my passport - I like to carry a solid perfume around. This one smells minty and fresh but has enough of a musky undertone to carry me through the evening with panache.

ulta3 Eyeshadow Palette in Storm in a Cup

As a creature of habit I tend to go for a neutral brown smoky eye during the day but, as I mentioned before, you never know when you're going to need to change up your look. I like to carry this eyeshadow quad with me just in case as, with a white eyeshadow and three shades of grey (one of which could pass for black under certain lighting), it has everything I need in order to create a quick smoky eye on the go using my fingers. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this quad as ulta3 is, to all intents and purposes, a thoroughly nondescript brand sold in chemists Australia-wide. These shadows have good pigmentation however, and are easily blended with both fingers and a brush.

Clinique Touch Blush in Fresh Apricot

Other blushes have proven bulky to carry with me and difficult to apply on the run. This particular blush is an incredibly flattering shade for my skin tone and adds just the right amount of colour.

Lancome Juicy Tube in Lychee

Simply put, this is my favourite lip gloss. While I'm not a fan of the sticky consistency (and, come to think of it, neither is my boyfriend), the colour and flavour can't be beat. A gorgeous lip gloss suited to any outfit or occasion.

What's in your makeup bag?

Common Thread

Pink shoes from Target, short sleeved shirt dress and colour-blocked clutch from Forever New, sleeveless chambray dress from Supre, long-sleeved chambray shirt from Sass via Birdsnest

There may or may not be an underlying theme in the five items I've already bought this month. Possibly. I'm not sure.

You see, I'm the kind of girl with a running tally of specific items I think my wardrobe is lacking in my head. I'm also the kind of person who forgets to mentally check these items off of that list. (Before I continue, please ignore how wrinkled these items are; they've all been worn and washed but not ironed!) Unfortunately, this means that I've ended up with three incredibly similar items.

Sigh.

Here's a cute little happy snap of me with my grandmother at her birthday lunch this year (wearing my favourite summer dress from MINKPINK) which I wanted to share with you, along with two other things. The first is a something that I wrote for my beloved Purple Sneakers on Sydney band Deep Sea Arcade, who were lovely enough to mention it (and me!) on their Facebook. Listening to their music fills me with a happy little nostalgia; it makes me think of when I was young, and NOVA wasn't NOVA but Star FM, playing nothing but hits from the Sixties and Seventies. (So honestly it's safe to say that I've been playing 'Steam' while doing housework and that I'm awaiting the release of their album, Outlands, on March 9th with baited breath.)

The second thing I wanted to share was a little playlist for the past few days featuring Caitlin Park, an artist that I recently discovered when given the opportunity to quiz her for Purple Sneakers with a Q&A segment that should be posted soon.

From Day to Night with J

I'm sitting here burning my favourite Dusk candle of the moment (Kenitra, for, you know, posterity's sake), recovering from my whirlwind trip to the city, where I was visiting my very lovely boyfriend, R. I just had to start out this post with a picture of the too-cute-for-words tiramisu puppy dog cake I bought for R's best friend and roommate (W), in order to celebrate his birthday. W has a more than mild obsession with all cute creatures (except cats; he fucking hates cats), so it was more than fitting. It was $25 from Breadtop (and probably the most amazing thing I ate all week). We FaceTime'd W's mother in Dubai just to show her how utterly adorable his birthday cake was.

I wanted to talk quickly about the amazing day I spent with one of my closest friends in the world, J, on Wednesday (and, importantly, how I put together an outfit to take me from day to night). J recently returned from backpacking around Europe and we hadn't had enough time to catch up the last time I was in town, so we made plans to meet for coffee and catch ups on Queen Street, near J's workplace.

When J and I make plans to meet, we both subconciously clear out our entire schedule for the rest of the day. So, coffee turned into shopping (though miraculously, I didn't buy a single thing). Shopping turned into a trek through the food markets outside the casino, but it was so hot that soon enough we found ourselves heading inside the casino and seeking out Blackjack's Buffet, about which I have heard rave reviews.

J is a serious foodie - about which I will never complain - and inevitably admitted that she didn't want to pay upwards of thirty dollars for a buffet meal, no matter how good. (Honestly, neither did I - especially not a buffet meal that didn't come with a complementary cocktail.) Instead, we headed to Sushi Sushi, an alleyway sushi bar, for a quick bite and to meet up with our friend Z while we planned our travels to Asia in November. (More on that later!)

Z wanted to visit the menswear department at David Jones, which we did, not realising that shopping with Z is pretty much the most horrifying experience a person can undertake, ever. I have never seen someone deliberate over two identical pairs of navy chino pants for so long.

After inflicting that pain on ourselves, J and I were sorely in need of alcohol, so we headed to Bavarian Bier Cafe for a half-liter each, and then to our favourite basement bar (Dragonfly) to share all-you-can-eat dim sum - for the bargain price of $18.95 - and a fishbowl. Before we knew it, we were in danger of missing a late night catch up at Freestyle with Z et al and booking it across town on an express bus. Thankfully Z cancelled, leaving J and I free to catch Zed's Dead at Bowler Bar, my new favourite nighttime destination after Press Club. (Conviently, they're both on the same street.)

Number of hours J and I spent with each other after planning a one hour coffee catch up: 12

I think everyone has a friend like J. In fact, I know I have several. That's why, when I dress for a meeting with J, I dress knowing that my outfit will have to take me from day to night. Here's how I achieved the perfect day-to-night outfit on Wednesday:

I took a simple black singlet dress (from Supre) and threw a sheer jacket over the top (which is from Millers, and was stolen from my mother's closet!). Then I accessorized with my favourite tan handbag and statement necklace (from Portmans) and my new nude boots from Wittner, which are absolutely perfect for summer and an essential accessory for taking an outfit from day to night. What I love even more about this outfit is that you need only throw on a pair of tights and it can take you from warm weather to cold.

Now that I'm travelling more I'm starting to realize how important it is to have versatile pieces in your wardrobe and to value the importance of dressing to suit all occasions instead of one specific occasion. I've also started to look more at the pieces I constantly reach for in my wardrobe; this is sure to help with Resolution #3. (Detox and streamline my wardrobe.)

Concerning My Gluttonous Shopping Habits:

Easy JeanNylon Tricot Figure Skater Dress in Shiny Peach, 3D Mesh Flower Jumper in White and Denim Circle Skirt in Medium Stone-Washed Indigo, all by American Apparel

When I buy something new (or, as is more often the case, a few new something's) I invariably convince myself that it's the last thing I will buy - the last thing I'll need to buy, in fact - for the rest of the year. For a week, it is the latest and greatest of all my purchases, forsaking all others. But once a weeks grace period has passed, I'm back online, scouring through all of my bookmarked online stores for the next clothing item that will make me feel better about my semi-pathetic life.

Case in point: Last week I bought a sequinned skirt and two ridiculous statement necklaces from ASOS.com. They arrived yesterday; I tried them on in front of my boyfriend and asked for his opinion. Predictably, he pointed out that they are impractical purchases, but all very flattering. So, I dithered about, trying them on in different ensembles, trying to determine how on Earth I was going to integrate them into a wardrobe that is already directionless and in disarray. Now, a mere 24 hours later, I'm on the American Apparel website compiling a want list and reassuring myself that these four items are much more practical than the sequinned skirt and the rose gold collar I bought last week.

Maybe after I fulfill New Years Resolution #3 - detox, clean and organize my wardrobe and get rid of all the things I own and don't wear - I'll consider buying these four. They actually are quite practical, you know...

Curiouser and Curiouser

This has been a strange but wonderful week.

There's been a lot of good news, for a start. My boyfriend R and I have been seeing each other (long distance, admittedly) since late last year but finally made things Facebook official this week. And look, I'm not going to lie: I derive such a sick little joy out of going to my profile and seeing the words "In a relationship with [R]" under my name and birth date. But what is it about a changed relationship status that can send every male you've ever made extended eye contact with into an absolute flurry of questioning text messages and accusations? (Particularly, your best and arguably closest friend of three years?)

Them's the brakes, I guess. R's in town for work so, immediately following the fallout, we went into hiding in the little cabin he's staying in on a nearby dam a few towns over to enjoy the absolute peace and quiet. Asides, of course, from the never-ending rain pattering down outside. It's been such a rainy summer but for once, I don't seem to mind much - perfect cuddling weather. I think I probably had the most peaceful, most relaxed night conceivable. I don't actually remember the last time I was so content. Unfortunately though, the sun always comes up. Can't live in a little fantasy world forever.

On the plus side, I did get back into contact with N, a pen pal of sorts who means more to me and more in my life than most people who live a short drive across town. (N lives in Western Australia.) I'd almost forgotten how easy it is to talk to her, and how happy it makes me when we do. Talking about the past - about my old writing, which she was always the first person to read, and about our shared hatred of pretty much everyone in the world - brought back so many things, most of which I think it was important to remember.

I was polishing off a feature that I've been writing for Purple Sneakers (which should be published sometime before Monday pending editing and approval) but when I was inevitably smacked upside the head by writer's block, R and I went outside and cuddled on the balcony. (I've been practicing blowing smoke rings without much great success.)

And talk about this for a milestone: I even let him take pictures of me without makeup on. I don't even remember the last time I let someone take a picture of me without makeup on.

Here's my happy little playlist for the past week:

Oh, hey.

Last year I wrote a couple of sanctimonious reviews mocking big budget movies I saw and hated and these can be found on my good friend Kyle's blog, YouReviewAU (specifically, a review of Red Riding Hoodhere, and a review of Monte Carlohere, although I endorse that you check out the entire site which is predominantly full of meaningful, well-considered reviews of things that are actually good save for my bitchy rants about big budget movies) for those of you who are interested.

And, in an exciting turn of events, about 24 hours ago I found out that I got a sweet biscuits position as an online contributor for Purple Sneakers (also to be found on Twitter and Facebook). My first review for the site is of the mesmerizing video for Zimbabwe (Flume remix) by New Navy; the times, they are a-changin'.

Thought I'd share the love around. I know for a fact that Kyle has been super supportive of everything I've pursued in the three years that we've been friends, from trying my hand at music (which was a short-lived but no less embarrassing pursuit, to be completely honest with you), to scripts and, now, reviews.

Moving Is The Devil's Work

I'm in the middle of the moving process, which is the single greatest torture that can be inflicted on any hoarder. The mature, reasonable approach to moving house would be to calmly and carefully go through my possessions and discern what I actually need to keep, and what's superfluous. Then, throw out anything that I don't actually need or want anymore. Then, arrange my leftover possessions neatly, in an organised manner.

Fuck that, though. I'm shoving shit in boxes and hiding them around my little flat for Future Cheryl to deal with. I'm trying to be good about blogging and pushing myself to post with something sort of resembling regularity - yes, that's right; I made a New Year's Resolution to blog more - so here's some photos of my new little flat for you to enjoy, or whatever.

The one awesome thing about the dreaded moving process is discovering all the cool shit I own that's been overshadowed by my floor-drobe for the past year or so. Naturally there were moments during the year where I noticed a particular painting or cushion and thought "God, I'm so cool, look at all this shit I own - that's a fucking cool pillow, and it's fucking mine". But thought processes like that were routinely interrupted by "Wait, where the fuck is my (insert highly useful object destined to be buried under piles of clothing I bought but don't actually wear)?!"

I'm going to leave you with my Unpacking All My Useless Shit playlist. Hope you're all following through on your Resolutions like I am - be tidier, check; blog more, check, check, check.
